Autumn storm set to batter Britain

Gusts close to 70mph will hit areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland

Strong winds are expected to batter parts of Britain this weekend as the first storm of autumn rolls in.
Gusts close to 70mph will hit areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland, while most of England and Wales will face blustery conditions, forecasters have said.
Heavy rain is also predicted for parts of the country, with no sign of a return to the warm temperatures at the start of September.
Billy Payne, a meteorologist with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "The weather will get lively through the night and into tomorrow. Strong winds will hit northern and western parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and north west areas of England and Wales.
"Gales will exceed 60mph in northern parts of Scotland, before the wind and rain move in a south-east direction, bringing winds of between 40 and 50mph across England and Wales. High rainfall is expected as well, particularly in Scotland, where we could see 30 to 40mm."
Temperatures will remain in the mid-teens for most of the country over the weekend - a few degrees below average for the time of year - while conditions will remain unsettled into next week, forecasters have said.
The Met Office said it had issued severe weather warnings for the gales in Scotland and Northern Ireland tomorrow and the public should be aware of the potential for some minor disruption to travel.
Chief forecaster Paul Gundersen said: "A spell of gale force westerly winds is expected later Sunday, peaking on Monday across much of Scotland, the north of Northern Ireland and coasts of north west England and north Wales. Gusts of 50 - 60mph are likely, with the potential for 70mph across exposed coasts and hills of Scotland.
"The public should be aware of the potential for some minor disruption to travel and keep up to date with the latest weather forecast information."
Heavy showers in the South East last night saw 27mm of rain fall in Northolt, north-west London, and 26mm at Heathrow, while East Anglia and the Midlands were hit by 10 to 15mm of rain.

Firefighters strike 'unavoidable'

The Fire Brigades Union said government leaders in England and Wales had failed to reach a compromise to prevent strikes

A firefighters strike seems "unavoidable" in England and Wales in a row over pensions, according to the Fire Brigades Union.
The administrations in Westminster and Cardiff have "refused to reach a compromise" and an announcement of strike action is "likely to follow soon", the union said.
Revised proposals from the Scottish Government mean that industrial action may not proceed in Scotland, it added.
FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack said: "As a result of the refusal of governments in Westminster and Cardiff to see sense on firefighter pensions, it now appears that strike action is unavoidable in England and Wales.
"Almost 80% of firefighters voted in favour of industrial action if no progress could be made, but we have tried everything to avoid strike action being necessary.
"Although we are some way from an agreement, the Scottish Government's decision to engage positively with firefighters, offer improved proposals and not set any arbitrary deadlines for talks demonstrates that progress can be made through talks when both sides are willing.
"It's not too late to avoid a strike: the governments of England and Wales must see sense, put public safety first and come back to the negotiating table willing to compromise."
Since announcing that almost 80% of members had voted in favour of strike action, the union has met representatives of the administrations in Scotland, Wales and Westminster as well as fire and rescue service employers.
The union's executive council met on Thursday to review these talks and consider the next steps.
On Friday, the executive council issued a statement to members saying it had "no option" but to call periods of strike action in England and Wales. It also said it would now consult and communicate with FBU members in Scotland and the UK on the proposals received thus far and the ongoing talks.

Storm chaser's remarkable pictures show terrifying cloud formations

Storm

Breathtaking shots from Colorado, Kansas and Texas are real, believe it or not.

Committed storm chaser Marko Korosec took these incredible pictures of the phenomena known as 'supercells' during a 26-day trip across the United States.
Storm

The pictures capture three incredible storms from a distance of 1km away.

Storm

The phenomena takes place as dry air from the Rocky Mountains and Canada combines with the warm, moist air of the Gulf of Mexico.

Tornado Alley, where the photos were taken, stretches across the three states and is famed for its storms, known as supercells.

Supercells are characterised by the persistent rotating updraft known as a mesocyclone, giving the cloud its imposing, cyclone-like look.

The result is these potentially severe, rotating thunderstorms that can affect weather up to 20 miles away.

Duke and Beckham in wildlife scheme

The Duke of Cambridge and David Beckham have recorded two video campaigns against illegal wildlife products

The Duke of Cambridge and David Beckham have been photographed together to mark the recording of two video campaigns they have made against illegal wildlife products.
William, Beckham and retired Chinese professional basketball star Yao Ming, filmed public service announcements in London on behalf of the organisation WildAid.
The messages will be broadcast globally in November but their target audiences are in China and Vietnam, countries which have large markets for illegal wildlife products.
Speaking about why he decided to record the public messages, David Beckham said: "When I learned of the current poaching levels in Africa, I immediately agreed to help get this message out.
"It is shocking to think that we could lose these animals from the wild in our lifetimes."
A spokesman for WildAid, which campaigns to end the illegal wildlife trade, said: "The ivory trade claims the lives of an estimated 25,000 elephants annually and according to South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs, as of September 5 at least 618 rhinos were killed for their horns in 2013, which may break last year's record of 668 poached rhinos later this month."
Peter Knights, WildAid executive director, said: "In the messages the Duke of Cambridge, David Beckham and Yao Ming will urge consumers to not purchase illegal wildlife products, specifically rhino horn, ivory, and shark fin."
He added: "In one message they specifically talk about their concern as fathers, that future generations will lose these animals unless we can reduce the demand for endangered wildlife products.
"In the second message they show how all the rhinos left in the wild could fit inside just one soccer stadium."

Malaysian Hip Hop is on another level!

The first ever Official Malaysian Hip Hop Awards is finally here.
Malaysian Hip Hop Awards (© Amy Chatterton)

In the DIY spirit of Hip Hop Culture, The MoveMint and Bite Media have embarked on a mission to commemorate and award members of the Malaysian Hip Hop Community for their contributions.

The MY Hip Hop Awards is a celebration of independence and intends to give back to a proud and talented arts scene.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at the end of November 2013 and is expected to draw in some of the most respected and talented Hip Hop acts of the nation.

“It's about time we recognized members of Malaysia's Hip Hop community and in doing so create an awards that can live on and honor the different elements of Hip Hop culture here in Malaysia.

Over the past 10 years I've had the chance to witness the Malaysian Hip Hop scene grow and develop into it's own. With so much hard work and dedication by members of the scene, we also realized that this input was going unrecognized by the mainstream awards already in existence, who's main focus seems bent on an artists commercial success or popularity, rather than skill and dedication to their artistic craft.

Through proper recognition we hope to unearth and expose new talents and create a climate of creativity to uplift the Malaysian Hip Hop scene and strengthen its core foundation.” said Jason Vandal, CEO of The MoveMint and the founder MY Hip Hop Awards.

Submissions for MY Hip Hop Awards will begin on September 23rd, 2013 and the closing deadline will be on the 10th of October, 2013.

The final nominee list is expected to be announced by the 20th of October for a voting period of 2 weeks from the public and selected judges from the region.

All songs are to be submitted as Soundcloud links and all music videos as Youtube links to myhiphopawards@gmail.com. (all participants must send in full profile with contact details, pictures and social media links). For B-Boy please submit a YouTube video and profile, for Graffiti a portfolio of your 5 best pieces of work and profile.

Participating musicians, B-Boy and Graffiti artists are advised to join the Official MY Hip Hop Awards Facebook pagefor all further announcements.

'22' singer Taylor Swift has refused to rule out more acting roles after appearances on the likes of 'New Girl' and 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation', but she insisted it would only be for the ''right'' part.
'22' singer Taylor Swift has refused to rule out more acting roles after appearances on the likes of 'New Girl' and 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation', but she insisted it would only be for the ''right'' part.
Taylor Swift is open to more acting roles in the future.

The 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' singer has already played parts on the big and small screen - she has appeared in 'Valentine's Day', 'New Girl' and 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation' - and she has admitted she wouldn't rule out more in the future if the ideal project ''came along''.

She told E! News: ''That's always something that's in the back of my mind, if the right thing came along.''

While the 23-year-old star is open to the possibility of furthering her acting career, music remains her true passion and she insisted it would have to be an ''amazing'' offer to tempt her away from being a working musician.

She added: ''It would have to be something so amazing that it would take me away from writing songs and touring, which would have to be an incredible script.''

Taylor has been at the Toronto International Film Festival getting another taste of the film industry after her wrote a song - 'Sweeter Than Fiction' - for the end credits of 'One Chance'.

The movie focuses on the true story of Paul Potts, the former shop assistant who rose to fame after winning the first series of 'Britain's Got Talent' in 2007.

Taylor said: ''The story just blew me away. I didn't know the story of Paul Potts.
''He's working a cellphone store and then ended up winning 'Britain's Got Talent' ... You have to see it. It makes you feel so many different things.''

Khloe Kardashian tested for STDs?

Khloe Kardashian reportedly got tested for sexually transmitted diseases after she heard her husband Lamar Odom didn't use contraception when he was allegedly cheating on her.
Khloe Kardashian reportedly got tested for sexually transmitted diseases after she heard her husband Lamar Odom didn't use contraception when he was allegedly cheating on her.

Khloe Kardashian reportedly got tested for sexually transmitted diseases after hearing about her husband's alleged cheating.

The reality TV star is said to have been tested earlier this year after claims Lamar Odom had been unfaithful during their marriage without using protection.

An insider told RadarOnline.com: ''Lamar refused to admit to how many women it was, but Khloe knew it was at least five different women in the past year.

''Khloe knew she had to go to the doctor, and was tested for a full range of sexually transmitted diseases. She is healthy, thankfully, but never thought this would happen to her.

''It's bad enough that Lamar betrayed their marriage vows, but to place her health in jeopardy is just disgusting.''
It is said the basketball star - who was reportedly spied on by a private investigator hired by his wife - admitted he ''didn't use protection'' when he allegedly cheated.

The source added: ''[Khloe] was physically sick to her stomach when Lamar admitted that not only had he cheated on her, but didn't use protection 100 percent of the time.''

Simon Cowell: I wish I was gay

Simon Cowell wishes he was gay because he would have saved a fortune over the years if he preferred to date men instead of women.
Simon Cowell wishes he was gay because he would have saved a fortune over the years if he preferred to date men instead of women.

Simon Cowell wishes he was gay.

The 53-year-old music mogul - who is expecting his first child with Lauren Silverman following a passionate affair - is known for having a string of girls on his arm, but he admits his womanising ways risked him going bankrupt and life would be easier if he just dated men instead.

The 'X Factor' boss has previously struck up a romance with TV presenter Terri Seymour, pop singer Sinitta and make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy, but instead of ending on sour terms, the star showers his ex-lovers with pricey gifts and regularly takes them on lavish holidays.

Speaking in an interview hosted by Terri, when she asked if he had ever feared bankruptcy, he said: ''Yes, particularly when I've had girlfriends like you lot!

''I said to someone the other day that I wish I had been born gay. I would have saved a fortune.''

However, despite Simon's eye for the ladies, he has recently hinted he might be ready to settle down and is considering tying the knot with his current girlfriend Lauren, who is believed to be around three months pregnant, at some point in the future.

He said previously: ''I'm not ruling anything out in the future. If you asked me a year ago, at my age am I going to have a baby, I probably would have said 'no' so you've just got to take each day as it comes now.
''Whatever feels right you should do.''

Police rushed to Tulisa's mansion following fears she was about to be kidnapped.

A major operation sprang into life on Wednesday night (11.09.13) after an emergency call was made from the N-Dubz singer's £6 million mock-Georgian property in Hertfordshire following concern that two men were about to break into her home and abduct her.

The suspects, who were reported acting suspiciously, were detained and questioned after four squad cars and a dog unit arrived at the scene, but police have confirmed no crime had been committed.

A torchlight search of the grounds was carried out, while two officers entered the plush pad to sound the all-clear, before leaving in the early hours of yesterday morning (12.09.13).

John O'Connor, Former Met Flying Squad commander, told The Sun newspaper: ''Tulisa is much more likely to be a kidnap victim than the average member of the public.

''If police have resources available at the time they should use them. It keeps everyone on their toes.''

A spokesman for the Hertfordshire Police said: ''We were called at 10.23pm to reports of suspicious behaviour of two men in a vehicle outside a property.

''Both men were spoken to. As a precaution, we also searched the area. We were satisfied no crimes had occurred.''

Sheryl Crow: Lance Armstrong is irrelevant to me

Sheryl Crow claims her ex-fiancé Lance Armstrong has no relevance to her life and she doesn't care about his public downfall.
Sheryl Crow claims her ex-fiancé Lance Armstrong has no relevance to her life and she doesn't care about his public downfall.

Sheryl Crow claims her ex-fiancé Lance Armstrong has no relevance to her life and she doesn't care about his public downfall.
Sheryl Crow says Lance Armstrong has ''zero relevance'' to her life.

The singer was briefly engaged to the now disgraced pro cyclist - who was banned from cycling and stripped of his seven gold medals after admitting to doping - before they called things off in 2006, but she insists she has put the memories of their relationship firmly behind her.

Speaking on CNN's 'Piers Morgan Live', Sheryl said: ''It has such little relevance to my life right now - in fact, zero relevance. I watch it kind of like everybody else is watching it.

I watched a little bit of the first interview [with Oprah Winfrey] and I have such a big detachment from it that I probably feel the same as everyone else.
''I haven't seen him in years. It feels like a lifetime ago, honestly.''

The country musician - who has adoptive sons Wyatt, six, and Levi, three - is irked by her reputation as one of the 'most dumped' celebrities and believes her focus on her career is what has made it hard to hold down a relationship.

Sheryl explained: ''I've read a couple of times that Jennifer Aniston and I, the two of us have been dumped more than any two people, but it's not true. I don't like my private life to be for public consumption.

''But I will tell you one thing: I take credit for some of the demises. It's difficult to date a woman who's strong, and who runs a business, and who's done a lot.''

The 'If It Makes You Happy' songstress isn't worried about being single aged 51 and still believes she can find true love.

She added: ''I would love to get married. It was not exactly the way I thought my life was going to be. You know, I'm from a family where my parents are still married and close, and they have a good relationship, so I have a good example of what a loving relationship looked like.

''I've had a real rock star life where I've been on the road for a long time. I love what I do. I've had some really exciting love affairs.''

The original team coaches of The Voice is back!

Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green, oh, how we’ve missed you both!
The Voice US (© AXN)
Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green are back to the signature red swivel chairs for the fifth and latest thrilling season of the Emmy-nominated vocal talent competition show, The Voice.

Premiering on the same week of the US telecast, first and exclusively on AXN, The Voice Season 5 will reunite the original team of celebrity musician coaches that started it all.

The reunion promises to bring back the amazing chemistry – including the ‘bro-mance’ – among the coaches, in addition to America’s most exciting new singing talents that have set
The Voice apart from the competition on TV.

Last season, Usher and Shakira took on the mantle with Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, as Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green went on a break for their individual commitments. Back looking hotter than ever, the sizzling Christina who spent time with her five year old son and traveled, said, “I have to take breaks, stay connected with myself. I’m a mom.

When I leave here I put on sweats and a T-shirt, I check out. I needed some time to do that. I am revived and renewed.”
Returning from performing the ‘CeeLo Green is Loberace’ live show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, CeeLo Green said, “I missed everyone. I'm happy to be here.”

Both return to a series that is now looking like “The Blake Shelton Show” as the country music star has already coached three consecutive winners of The Voice since season 2. Can any of the other three coaches change that this new season?

And while Blake Shelton ‘got close’ to Usher in season 4, the ‘bro-mance’ between him and Adam Levine is set to re-ignite in The Voice Season 5. Already, promotional footage aired in the US actually sees Adam telling Blake, “You’re gorgeous, man,” and Blake returning with a peck to his cheek!

And for those who are wondering, the producers have confirmed that Usher and Shakira will be back in the next season, as the ‘family’ of coaches has essentially grown from four to six. In the meantime, let’s enjoy the reunion of the original awesome foursome in The Voice Season 5 only on AXN!

The Voice Season 5 premieres first and exclusively on AXN (Astro 701) & AXN HD (Astro B.yond ch721), 29 September (Sunday) at 8.10pm.

Lee Hyo-ri says married life is ‘similar’ to dating

Lee Hyo-ri
Lee Hyo-ri

Singer Lee Hyo-ri appeared on radio for the first time since her wedding last week.

On the MBC radio show “Noon’s Hope Song, This is Kim Shin-young” yesterday, Lee was connected on the phone while girl group Spica was featured as a guest on the program.

“I thought that things would be different after I got married, but it’s very similar,” she said. “Many have said it will be different, but I’m not feeling it yet.”

Host Kim Shin-young cited a story heard by one of the audience members that newly married wives get annoyed by their husbands who want to overthrow dining tables when their eyes meet, and proceeded to ask Lee how she was doing.

Lee wittingly responded that her husband would never do that because he’s the one who sets up the dining table.

Lee said she has been mentoring the group before the release of its third EP “Tonight” last month.

India gang rape trial: Live Report

AFP IS CLOSING THE LIVE REPORT ON the India gang rape trial. A court in Delhi sentenced four men to death for the fatal gang rape of a physiotherapy student on board a bus in December 2012.

India gang rape trial: Live Report
Protesters outside a court in Delhi call for the death penalty for four men convicted of rape and murder, on September 13, 2013.
The judge said the case, which sparked widespread anger over the treatment of women in the country, fell into the "rarest of rare category", which justified capital punishment: "In these times when crimes against women are on the rise, court cannot turn a blind eye to this gruesome act."

The courtroom burst into applause.

Judge to rule on death sentence for Delhi gang rapists
1012 GMT:  AFP's correspondent Abhaya Srivastava reports that the gang will now be taken to Tihar prison in west Delhi where they will be held on death row.

This is same the jail where the men have been held since their arrest and where one of the gang, the bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanged in his cell in March.

1010 GMT:  The debate over the death penalty has not ended with the decision to execute the gang.  On social media not everyone agrees with the judgement.

http://news.malaysia.msn.com/top-stories/india-gang-rape-trial-live-report-1

Hindustan Times reader Chintan Vrajeshwari writes: “BAD JUDGEMENT...Judiciary influenced by public pressure...very bad development and shows badly on the judges who made this judgement. They have lost all sense of not being biased or pressured.”

0956 GMT:  Calls for the executions to be carried out rapidly have appeared on social media. A NDTV reader named Veni writes: "Now with the same momentum please execute the punishment without any delay. No appeals, no mercy petitions, just execute them. Public hanging will send a strong message to all those rapists hidden in the crowd who are happy to have fooled the system!"

0950 GMT:  Champa Devi, the mother of Vinay Sharma, spoke to AFP prior to the sentencing, from the slum in the south of the Delhi where most of the gang lived, saying her son and friend and fellow convict Pawan Gupta were "good boys".

"They are hard workers. Not one complaint against them.
"Then this Ram Singh caught him that night and trapped him into this mess."

0945 GMT:  AFP's Delhi bureau says feelings have been running high in a country disgusted by daily reports of gang rapes and sex assaults on children.
A total of 1,098 cases of rape have been reported to police in Delhi alone so far this year, figures in The Times of India show.

0941 GMT:  Handing down his verdict at the end of the seven-month trial, Judge Yogesh Khanna found the men guilty of the "cold-blooded" murder of a "helpless victim" whose fight for life won her the nickname of Braveheart.

0938 GMT:  Former neighbours of the four attackers who lived in Ram Dass Camp, an unauthorised slum in Delhi, had promised to hand out sweets in celebration if the judge sent the men to the gallows.

Maur Singh, a one-time neighbour, earlier told AFP: "They deserve the harshest punishment... Reform is out of the question."

0935 GMT: "This is a landmark judgement. It has set an example and shows people that the law will punish you. These men deserve death," says Akanksha Kumari, a 21-year-old student, protesting outside the court wearing a black head band.

0931 GMT:  AFP's correspondent Annie Banerji writes from the court: "Scores of people waited outside the court building to hear the verdict. Police barricaded the entire road where the court stands. Dozens of protesters cheered the judgement, chanting slogans and holding posters reading "hang the rapists".

0926 GMT:  Reflecting the widespread anger over the case, some online commentators have called for the juvenile involved in the fatal rape to be attacked and killed.

The teenager was sentenced by a different court to three years in a correctional facility -- the maximum possible sentence under Indian law.

0920 GMT:  But as the news broke, the crowds inside the building and outside the courtroom roared with cheers and applauded the judgement.

0918 GMT: AFP's Roberto Schmidt says more protestors have arrived outside the court some carrying indian flag and placards.... "They seem to getting more agitated."

0913 GMT: The reaction online at the news the attackers would hang was celebratory:
One Hindustan Times reader writes: "Finally ...justice.. great job done judiciary.."

0908 GMT: The father of the gang rape victim says he is 'happy' with the death sentences.
"We are very happy. Justice has been delivered," he told reporters inside court flanked by his wife and sons.
0905 GMT: Judge Yogesh Khanna told the court that the case fell into the "rarest of rare category", which justified capital punishment.

One of the men, Vinay Sharma, broke down in tears as the sentence was announced.

0902 GMT: AFP's Abhaya Srivastava reporting from the courtroom says the convicts look sad and appear to be teary-eyed.

They are dressed more smartly than at previous court appearances. Three of them are in shirts and one in a T-shirt.

0859 GMT:   THE NEW DELHI GANG RAPISTS HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO DEATH.

0856 GMT:  AFP’s Delhi bureau reports that the mother of one of the convicted, Akshay Thakur, has been praying to Hindu deities all week at the family’s home in poverty-stricken Bihar state.

She has pleaded for the life of her son to be spared.  "I am hopeful that God will help us during the worst crisis in our life."

0853 GMT:  It's not certain that the court will pass the death penalty in this case, but India ended its unofficial eight-year moratorium on capital punishment last November when it executed the only surviving gunman from the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Weeks later, a Kashmiri was hanged over his role in an attack on parliament a decade ago.

0845 GMT: In the past few days, the victim's mother has begged the judge to hand down the death sentence. The identity of the parents cannot revealed in order to protect the identity of their late daughter.

"We beg the court that justice should be given to our daughter," the mother told reporters. "It was not merely a mistake, they planned and killed her mercilessly."

Both parents say only the death penalty can bring the family some closure.

0840 GMT:  Among the messages posted on India's DNTV website is one from a commentator called Singh: "Nothing Will Happen!!! Even If They Get life sentence or death, they will appeal in upper courts, district, high, supreme and it goes on and on and on......"

0838 GMT: AFP's South Asia Chief Photographer, Roberto Schmidt says: "Hundreds of journalists, two dozen protestors and scores of policemen, some in riot gear and using horses have gathered in front of courthouse."

0833 GMT:  Debate continues to rage online over whether the four men should be given the death sentence.
One reader on the Hindustan Times website says: "The judgement should be according to the merits of the case and nothing else! This idea that Death Penalty should be given to all 4 of them, just because there is a Mob outside the court is absolutely WRONG!"

Others have called for the rapists to be shown no mercy and be killed.

0828 GMT: Police sources have told AFP correspondent Annie Banerji outside the court that the convicted have arrived, transported in a bus with blacked out windows.

0825 GMT: AFP photographer Manan Vatsyayana, standing outside the court, says a large crowd of TV journalists and press have gathered to cover the trial.  He says police are carrying riot gear in anticipation of trouble following the sentencing.

WELCOME TO AFP'S LIVE REPORT on the sentencing of four men found guilty of the murder and gang rape of a young student on a bus in Delhi in December 2012.  The attack sparked mass protests across India and triggered the introduction of tough new anti-rape laws.

The parents of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student have been at the forefront of calls for the men, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma, to be sentenced to death over the attack.

A juvenile has already been sentenced to three years in a correctional facility, while a fifth adult defendant, bus driver Ram Singh, was found hanging in his prison cell in March while awaiting trial.

The victim and her companion had spent the evening watching a movie at a mall in south Delhi when they were picked up by one of the many private buses plying the streets.

But rather than take them home, the group subjected the pair to a horrifying 45-minute ordeal that ended with both of them thrown out of the bus, virtually unconscious and naked.

The young woman, who was repeatedly raped and then violated with an iron rod, died of her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.
